Set up for an online sharing circle

Sharing circles are an ancient practice which can be really powerful. They help build connection, help us see other perspectives, and allow us to be vulnerable in a supportive environment.

While traditionally these are held in-person, with participants sitting in a circle around a fire or altar, over the pandemic sharing circles have been adapted to take place online. There are definitely some downsides to online sharing circles, however they can still be just as powerful.

Tips for setting up your space for an online sharing circle:

  • Create a special atmosphere - create the feeling of an in-person sharing circle at home by making sure your space is calming, dimming the lights, surrounding yourself with special objects, and getting into your comfies.

  • Get ready and with plenty of time - you don’t want to be worrying about finding a zoom link minutes before your circle is due to start!

  • Minimise distractions - the biggest downside to online sharing circles is that you’re on a device that is designed to distract you! So turn off your notifications, close your other tabs and shut your pet/partner/children in another room so you can really be present in the circle

  • Arrive with an open mind, ready to share and listen - the magic of a sharing circle comes from the sharing AND the listening. So prepare to listen to the group without judgement or jumping in with opinions.

What to bring to an online sharing circle:

  • Something to journal with

  • Anything to help you be comfy - cushions, blankets, fluffy socks

  • Your favourite drink and snack

  • Anything to make your space feel special - candles, sage, incense, crystals

A circle of women may just be the most powerful force known to humanity.

If you have one, embrace it. If you need one, seek it. If you find one, for the love of all that is good and holy, dive in. Hold on. Love it up. Get Naked. Let them see you. Let them hold you. Let your reluctant tears fall. Let yourself rise fierce and love gentle.

You will be changed. The very fabric of your being will be altered by this, if you allow it. Please, please allow it.
